Bajoran Time of Cleansing
The Bajoran Time of Cleansing was a custom in the Bajoran religion during which people fasted for a month and abstained from worldly pleasures.
During the Time of Cleansing in 2372, Quark noted that the Bajoran people were not the most sinful people to begin with and claimed the only thing the Bajorans were cleansing was his pocketbook. He attempted to make cuts in his employees' pay, which resulted in Rom and the other employees forming the Guild of Restaurant and Casino Employees. (DS9: "Bar Association")
This month-long period of fasting is reminiscent of Human religious traditions such as Ramadan, Bein ha-Metzarim and Lent.
Oddly enough, even though Quark claimed that all Bajorans took part in the Time of Cleansing, Leeta and several other Bajoran employees at Quark's were seen continuing their daily jobs without interference.
