A backstory was a telling of one's past history, with an emphasis on those events that best explained one's current lifestyle, personality, circumstances, and motivations.

In 2259, Christopher Pike admitted that he had never told anyone about his pony Sir-Neighs-a-Lot being put down, noting, ""It's hard when your tragic backstory starts with a silly name."" (SNW: "A Quality of Mercy")
