Automatic transmission was common in automobiles with an internal combustion engine during the 20th and 21st centuries.

In 2268, James T. Kirk read an issue of The Gallian, which had an advertisement for the Jupiter 8, which was a sports car that was equipped with "super flow automatic transmission". (TOS: "Bread and Circuses")
