Password being entered

An asterisk was a 6-pointed star-shaped symbol used to indicate information that was omitted, hidden, or found elsewhere.

Some computer programs, such as those used at Chronowerx Industries in the 1990s, used asterisks to obscure a password as it was being entered. (VOY: "Future's End")
