Apocryphal
Something that was referred to as apocryphal was a story that was generally considered a lie, despite being told as if it wasn't. As an example, the books of the Bible that were considered the canonical scriptures, were generally the sixty-six books of the Hebrew scriptures and the Christian Greek. Any others were generally thought to be apocryphal.
In 2369, Data believed that the account about an apple falling on Sir Isaac Newton's head was apocryphal. A holographic duplicate of Newton found such a comment offensive, however. (TNG: "Descent")
In 2371, Toscat made a similar claim about the Ocampa's cognitive abilities prior to the Caretaker assuming their care, saying that, contrary to Kes's beliefs, the supposed true abilities of their people were either apocryphal at worst, exaggerated at best. (VOY: "Caretaker")
