When Kirk was detained in 1969 on Earth, and interrogated on who he was by Lieutenant Colonel Fellini, a member of the US Air Force Air Police at the US 498th Airbase Group, Kirk responded by saying, "the truth is, I'm a little green man from Alpha Centauri, a beautiful place. You ought to see it." (TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday")

In the real world, a team of astronomers announced the discovery of Alpha Centauri Bb, an Earth-size terrestrial planet, in 2012. Three years later, however, another team of astronomers determined that this elusive ghost planet was all along nothing more than a measurement artefact. A second possible planet, known as Candidate 1, was detected in 2021 but has not yet been confirmed to exist. By 2024, there were two confirmed exoplanets orbiting Proxima Centauri.
The current location of Alpha Centauri in the Beta Quadrant was based on the most recent star charts seen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Section 31.
