- During a historic battle involving the Constellation-class starship USS Stargazer and attacking hostile forces, the captain is killed and Lieutenant Commander Jean-Luc Picard takes command of the bridge. The twenty-two year length of Picard's captaincy is mentioned in TNG studio sources, such as the writer's guidebook. It is later confirmed in the commemorative plaque(X) for the Stargazer seen in the episode "The Star Gazer".
