Bimekizumab, sold under the brand name Bimzelx, is a medication used to treat plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.[5]

The most common side effects include upper respiratory tract infections (nose and throat infection) and oral candidiasis (thrush, a fungal infection in the mouth or throat).[5] Injection site reactions were also common, reported in 3% of subjects.[7] It is a humanized anti-IL17A, anti-IL-17F, and anti-IL17AF monoclonal antibody[5][8]

Bimekizumab was approved for medical use in Europe in 2021,[5][9][10] and in the United States in 2023.[11][12]

Medical uses

In the EU, bimekizumab is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, active psoriatic arthritis, non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis, and active ankylosing spondylitis.[5]

In terms of the mode of action of Bimekizumab we find that it inhibits both IL-17A and IL-17F this in turn causes normalization of skin inflammation, and improved clinical symptoms.[13][14]

History

Bimekizumab is being developed by Belgian pharmaceutical company UCB.

Bimekizumab is the international nonproprietary name (INN).[15]

Research

Phase III trials have demonstrated that bimekizumab is superior to not only adalimumab[16] but also secukinumab[17] and ustekinumab[18] for the treatment of plaque psoriasis.
