All Spells Upcast
This rule transforms spellcasting from a mishmash of utility spells that are only useful at one level and scaling spells that have upcast effects into one, collective category, where all spells have upcasting benefits. Ideally, this will also be used alongside other scaling rules and/or with an alternative spell slot progression, but it can also be used with 5e rules as written.
1st-Level Spells
Alarm
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, increase the cube's dimensions by 5 feet for each slot level above 1st.
Beast Bond
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd or 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 24 hours.
Ceremony
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you get an additional benefit as described by the option of the spell you chose:
- Atonement. The DC for the Wisdom (Insight) check is reduced by 1 for each slot level above 1st.
- Bless Water. You can create an additional vial of holy water for every 2 slot levels above 1st.
- Coming of Age. The duration extends by 24 hours for each slot level above 1st.
- Dedication. The duration extends by 24 hours for each slot level above 1st.
- Funeral Rite. The duration extends by 24 hours for each slot level above 1st.
- Wedding. The duration extends by 24 hours for each slot level above 1st.
Compelled Duel
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the spell lasts up to 1 hour and doesn't require concentration.
Comprehend Languages
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you need not touch a surface to translate text written on it.
Detect Evil and Good
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the radius increases by 5 feet for each slot level above 1st. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, mundane means cannot block the spell's divination.
Detect Magic
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the radius increases by 5 feet for each slot level above 1st. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, mundane means cannot block the spell's divination.
Detect Poison and Disease
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the radius increases by 5 feet for each slot level above 1st. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, mundane means cannot block the spell's divination.
Disguise Self
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd or 4th level, it lasts for 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th or 6th level, it lasts for up to 24 hours. When you use a spell slot of 7th or 8th level, it lasts for up to 7 days. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, it lasts until dispelled.
Divine Favor
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d4 for every 2 slot levels above 1st.
Entangle
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the radius increases by 5 feet for each slot level above 1st. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, it doesn't require concentration.
Expeditious Retreat
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, your speed also increases by 5 feet for every 3 slot levels above 1st. When you cast it with a spell slot of 5th level or higher, it doesn't require concentration.
Faerie Fire
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, increase the cube's dimensions by 5 feet for each slot level above 1st.
Feather Fall
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 1st.
Find Familiar
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the familiar gains 2 additional hit points for each slot level above 1st. When you cast it using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the familiar's AC increases by 1 for every 2 slot levels above 1st.
Gift of Alacrity
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the range becomes 10 feet, and you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 1st.
Goodberry
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you create 1d4+1 additional goodberries for each slot level above 1st.
Grease
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the square's dimensions increase by 5 feet for each slot level above 1st.
Identify
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, it no longer requires a material component.
Illusory Script
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the duration increases by 1 day for each slot level above 1st. When you use a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the material component becomes (any kind of ink, which the spell consumes).
Jump
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level, the duration increases to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 3rd level, it increases to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 4th level, it increases to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th level, it increases to 24 hours. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, it lasts until dispelled.
Mage Armor
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the base AC bonus increases by 1 for every 2 slot levels above 1st.
Beast Bond
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 3rd or 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 24 hours.
Purify Food and Drink
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the radius of the sphere increases by 5 feet for each slot level above 1st.
Sanctuary
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level, the duration increases to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 3rd level, it increases to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 4th level, it increases to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th or 6th level, it increases to 24 hours. When you use a spell slot of 7th or 8th level, it increases to 7 days. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, it lasts until dispelled.
Shield
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3nd level or higher, you can maintain concentration on it, extending its effects to last for up to 1 minute.
Shield of Faith
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 3rd or 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 24 hours.
Silent Image
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 3rd or 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 24 hours.
Snare
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the casting time is reduced to 1 action. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the spell lasts until dispelled.
Speak with Animals
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level, the duration increases to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 3rd or 4th level, it increases to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th or 6th level, it increases to 24 hours. When you use a spell slot of 7th or 8th level, it increases to 7 days. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, it lasts until dispelled.
Tasha's Hideous Laughter
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 1st.
Tenser's Floating Disk
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the disk can both support up to 50 more pounds and be up to 50 feet farther from you for each slot level above 1st.
Thunderous Smite
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, it deals an additional 1d6 damage for each slot level above 1st.
Unseen Servant
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd or 4th level, the duration increases to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th or 6th level, it increases to 24 hours. When you use a spell slot of 7th or 8th level, it increases to 7 days. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, it lasts until dispelled or you die.
Wrathful Smite
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, it deals an additional 1d6 damage for each slot level above 1st.
Zephyr Strike
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, it deals an additional 1d8 damage for each slot level above 1st.
2nd-Level Spells
Alter Self
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 24 hours. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts until dispelled or you cast it again.
Arcane Lock
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the amount the DC to undo the lock increases by increases by 1 for each slot level above 2nd.
Augury
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the cumulative percent chance for a false reading decreases by 5 for each slot level above 2nd (to a minimum of 5%).
Barkskin
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the AC minimum increases by 1 for every 2 slot levels above 2nd.
Beast Sense
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 24 hours.
Blur
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you don't need to concentrate on the spell, and its duration becomes 1 hour.
Calm Emotions
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you don't need to concentrate on the spell, and its duration becomes 1 hour.
Continual Flame
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you can create an additional flame for each slot level above 2nd.
Crown of Madness
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a 3rd-level spell slot, the duration is concentration, up to 10 minutes. When you use a 4th-level spell slot, the duration is concentration, up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the duration is concentration, up to 8 hours.
Darkness
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher and maintain concentration for the full duration, the spell lasts until dispelled.
Darkvision
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the range becomes 10 feet, and you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 2nd.
Detect Thoughts
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. Enthrall
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level, the spell lasts for up to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 5th level, the spell lasts for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the spell lasts indefinitely until a target can no longer hear you or you stop speaking.
Find Steed
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the steed gains 3 additional hit points for each slot level above 2nd. When you cast it using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the steed's speed increases by 5 feet for every 2 slot levels above 2nd.
Find Traps
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you learn the location of each detected trap. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 7th level or higher, the spell also detects natural hazards.
Gentle Repose
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the duration increases by 1 day for each slot level above 2nd.
Gift of Gab
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the spell targets 6 additional seconds of time for each slot level above 2nd.
Gust of Wind
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you don't need to concentrate on the spell, and its duration becomes 1 hour.
Jim's Glowing Coin
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level, the spell lasts for up to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 4th level or higher, it lasts for up to 1 hour.
Knock
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the spell is silent when opening nonmagical locks or arcane locks of a lower spell level.
Lesser Restoration
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you can cure an additional disease or condition for each slot level above 2nd.
Levitate
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours.
Locate Animals and Plants
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you learn of targets within an additional 5 miles for every 2 slot levels above 2nd.
Locate Object
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you learn of the object if it is within an additional 1,000 feat for every 2 slot levels above 2nd. When you use a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours.
Magic Mouth
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the message can be 5 words longer for each slot level above 2nd.
Maximilian's Earthen Grasp
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 2nd. When you use a spell slot of 3rd level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the spell lasts for 1 hour and no longer requires concentration (you can end it as an action).
Mirror Image
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level, the duration increases to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 4th level, it increases to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, it increases to 8 hours.
Misty Step
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the distance you can teleport increases by 15 feet for each slot level above 2nd.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the spell lasts until dispelled.
Pass Without Trace
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the bonus to Dexterity (Stealth) checks increases by +5 for every 3 slot levels above 2nd.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you can create an additional 5-foot cube of flame for each slot level above 2nd.
Ray of Enfeeblement
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts for up to 1 hour.
Rope Trick
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the extradimensional space can accomodate one additional Medium or smaller creature for each slot level above 2nd.
See Invisibility
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the duration increases to 8 hours.
Silence
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts for 1 hour.
Skywrite
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the spell no longer requires concentration.
Spider Climb
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the spell no longer requires concentration.
Spike Growth
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d4 for every 2 slot levels above 2nd. When you use a 4th level spell slot, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th or 6th level, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts for 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 7th or 8th level, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts for 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts for 24 hours.
Suggestion
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the spell no longer requires concentration.
Warding Bond
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you can target an additional creature with the spell for each slot level above 2nd, given you have enough platinum rings. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the bonus to AC and saving throws increases by +1 for every 3 slots above 2nd, and the duration increases to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, the spell lasts until dispelled.
Warding Wind
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour.
Web
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the cube's dimensions increases by 5 feet for each slot level above 2nd. When you use a spell slot of 5th or 6th level, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts for 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 7th or 8th level, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts for 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts until dispelled.
Wristpocket
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the weight limit increases by 5 pounds for each slot level above 2nd. When you use a spell slot of 5th or 6th level, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts for 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 7th or 8th level, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts for 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, the spell no longer requires concentration and lasts until dispelled.
3rd-Level Spells
Aura of Vitality
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the healing you can provide as a bonus action increases by 1d6 for every 2 slot levels above 3rd.
Beacon of Hope
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the spell no longer requires concentration.
Blinding Smite
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 3rd.
Blink
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the number you must roll on the d20 in order to blink decreases by 1 for each slot level above 3rd.
Clairvoyance
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours.
Conjure Barrage
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell sot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 3rd.
Create Food and Water
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you create an additional 15 pounds of food and 10 gallons of water for each slot level above 3rd.
Crusader's Mantle
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d4 for every 3 slot levels above 3rd.
Daylight
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th or 6th level, the duration increases to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 7th or 8th level, the duration increases to 24 hours. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, the spell lasts until dispelled.
Enemies Abound
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you can target an additional creature for each slot level above 3rd.
Fear
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour.
Feign Death
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level, the duration increases to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the spell lasts until dispelled.
Gaseous Form
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 3rd.
Haste
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 3rd.
Hunger of Hadar
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, each damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 3rd.
Hypnotic Pattern
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 10 minutes. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 1 hour.
Incite Greed
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the range increases by 30 feet for every 2 slot levels above 3rd.
Leomund's Tiny Hut
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5 level of higher, both the radius of the dome increases by 5 feet and the number of creatures that can be accommodated doubles for every 2 slot levels above 3rd.
Meld Into Stone
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage dealt to you upon being expelled from stone by its partial destruction or change in shape reduces by 1d6 for each slot level above 3rd.
Nondetection
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the dimensions a target can have increase by 5 feet for every 2 slot levels above 3rd. When you use a spell slot of 6th, 7th, or 8th level, the duration increases to 24 hours. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, the duration increases to 30 days.
Phantom Steed
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you create an additional steed for each level above 3rd.
Plant Growth
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the range increases by 50 feet for every 2 slot levels above 3rd.
Protection from Energy
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you can target an additional creature for each slot level above 3rd. When you use a spell slot of 5th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 6th level or higher, you can choose an additional damage type to grant resistance against for every 3 slot levels above 3rd.
Remove Curse
