The original staff of knowledge was created by a good wizard long ago, who wanted to share his great knowledge with the world. The staff can be wielded as a magic quarterstaff that grants a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. While holding it, your Intelligence score becomes 19 (if it is normally less than 19) and you gain an additional +2 bonus to Intelligence and Wisdom checks.
