A shield is a defensive tool that can be obtained through various means during Unite Battles in Pokémon UNITE.
Shields are used to defend against incoming damage, taking hits for the Pokémon that obtains it until it is used up. On the Pokémon's health bar, a shield is depicted as a white bar to the right of their remaining health. Shields last a finite amount of time, with the amount depending on how the shield was obtained. How they appear visually also depends on the source of the shield, though the most commonly used design consists of a yellow spherical forcefield that appears around the Pokémon.
Sources
Moves
Shields may often be obtained through a Pokémon's moves. A large number of moves will grant the user a shield when used, most commonly those of Defender Pokémon. These shields are typically small in size and last for a short amount of time. Some moves, such as Blissey's Safeguard and Eldegoss's Cotton Guard will also grant teammates shields rather than only the user. Shields provided through moves largely vary in appearance, as they are often themed after the move that provides it. Depending on the move, the shield may also provide other effects as well for as long as the shield lasts.
All Unite Moves also provide the user with a shield after the move ends that is the size of a certain percentage of the Pokémon's maximum HP. The size of this shield depends on the Pokémon's role. Defender Pokémon are provided a shield the size of 40% of their maximum HP, while Pokémon of all other roles are provided a shield the size of 20% of their maximum HP instead. Certain Unite Moves may instead provide a larger shield during the Unite Move, typically those that root the Pokémon in place for a long period of time while the Unite Move is being used, such as Decidueye's Nock Nock or Cramorant's Gatling Gulp Missile. Others, such as Mimikyu's Play With Me... or Alcremie's Fluffy Cream Supreme also provide an extra shield during the Unite Move. If this shield is lost before the Unite Move ends, the Unite Move will end early. In this case, a shield is still provided after the Unite Move ends.
A unique case is Umbreon's Unite Move, Moonlight Prance, which absorbs the shields of opposing Pokémon and takes them for itself. This is the only case of stealing shields from others in the game.
Abilities
A Pokémon's Ability is also a possible source of shields, such as in the case of Clefable's Magic Guard or Suicune's Pressure. These are typically provided when a certain condition is met and are also usually small in size and last a varying amount of time depending on the ability.
Held items
Certain held items may also provide shields for the holder as a part of their passive effect. Specifically, the Buddy Barrier, Score Shield, Assault Vest, and Resonant Guard held items. The Rescue Hood held item does not provide a shield by itself, but enhances the strength of the shields provided to ally Pokémon through other means.
Wild Pokémon
Some special wild Pokémon will provide shields to those who defeat them. Of the wild Pokémon, Drednaw, Avalugg, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Rayquaza, and Steely Pikachu all provide shields. These shields are typically larger than those provided from moves and last longer.
Some of these shields also provide other effects as long as they last. The shield that Avalugg provides also summons an ice aura around the Pokémon that damages opposing Pokémon, while Rayquaza's shield also provides faster scoring speed, protection from interruptions while scoring, and increased attack damage.
Goal zones
When a Pokémon stands under one of their team's goal zones, they will automatically gain a small shield that lasts for a short amount of time. The size of this shield depends on the tier of the goal zone, with goals closer to the base goal providing larger shields.
Certain actions may cause the effect of this shield to be strengthened or weakened. Specifically use of either Miraidon's Hadron Engine to create Electric Terrain or use of the Goal Hacker battle item. If either is used on the ally team's goal zones, the effect will be strengthened. If either is used on the opposing team's goal zones, the effect will be weakened.
