A scripted battle is a battle in which the player cannot influence some or any factors of the battle, and it is pre-determined by the game what happens.
In the core series games
- Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen: At the Pokémon Tower, there is a scripted battle against the ghost of a Marowak. In this battle, Marowak cannot be caught, only defeated.
- Pokémon Sword and Shield: At the beginning of the game, there is a scripted battle with ZacianSw/ZamazentaSh. In this battle, they are only known as ???, and cannot be defeated or caught.
- Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: At the end of The Way Home, there is a scripted final battle against a KoraidonS/MiraidonV. In this battle, the player cannot use any other Pokémon except their Koraidon/Miraidon, who cannot faint from attacks. If the player does not defeat the Koraidon/Miraidon fast enough, the game will automatically force them to Terastallize and use Tera Blast.
In the spin-off games
- Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness: A few scripted battles between two NPCs occur where the player cannot influence the battle.
- In Pokémon Colosseum, upon first reaching the Relic Stone during the story, Cipher Peon Skrub uses his Shadow Hitmontop in a scripted battle against Eagun's Pikachu. Hitmontop nearly always wins, and the story progresses as such; however, due to an oversight, it is possible for Pikachu to win if its Static activates and full paralysis occurs enough times to prevent it from being knocked out first. Hitmontop is fully healed before the player battles against Skrub immediately afterward.
- In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, upon first entering Gateon Port during the story, a sequence of events leads to Mystery Man Ardos battling with his Alakazam against Thug Zook's Shadow Zangoose. Alakazam always wins this fight.
- Upon first entering Cipher Key Lair during the story, Zook has another scripted battle with his Zangoose against Team Snagem Biden's Oddish. Zangoose always wins this fight and is fully healed before the player battles against Zook immediately afterward.
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky: There are some story bosses where the player still loses in the story regardless of whether they defeat the boss.
- In Crystal Crossing, there is a scripted battle against Grovyle in the first visit. It does not matter whether the player wins or loses this battle; the story progresses the same way with the player's team needing to be saved by Dusknoir.
- In Star Cave, there is a scripted battle against Snover's team in Bidoof's Wish, exclusive to Explorers of Sky. It does not matter whether the player wins or loses this battle; the story progresses the same way with Bidoof needing to be rescued by the other members of the guild.
