Reverse Mode

This article is about the state Shadow Pokémon enter in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. For its equivalent in Pokémon Colosseum, see Hyper Mode.

Reverse Mode (Japanese: リバース状態 Reverse State) is a condition Shadow Pokémon will sometimes enter after using a move during Pokémon battle in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. It is the counterpart to Hyper Mode from Pokémon Colosseum.

A Pokémon may be purified even when in Reverse Mode.

Entering Reverse Mode

A Pokémon may enter Reverse Mode after a Shadow move is used (even if it was not used by the Shadow Pokémon itself). While a Pokémon is in Reverse Mode, its status meter turns red and black, and an aura of the same color will appear around the Pokémon, presumably seen with the Aura Reader.

The odds of entering Reverse Mode depend on the Pokémon species and how much of Heart Gauge it has left; unlike Hyper Mode, this value always increases the closer the Pokémon is to being purified[1]:

The value "None" refers to a Pokémon's whose Heart Gauge is completely full. However, for player this only really applies to Shadow Lugia, who cannot be purified with the standard methods and as a consequence will never enter Reverse Mode.

Pokémon remain in Reverse Mode even after the battle ends.

Effects of Reverse Mode

  • During every turn a Shadow Pokémon is in Reverse Mode, it will deal damage to itself at the end of the turn, equal to ¹⁄₁₆ of the user's maximum HP, rounded down, either directly as the calculated result, or one more or less than it, chosen at random, similarly to Shadow Rush in Colosseum.[1]
  • Items cannot be used on a Pokémon in Reverse Mode, except Scents.

Unlike Hyper Mode, Reverse Mode does not increase the critical hit ratio of Shadow Rush or cause any effects of disobedience. Also, its activation does not use up a Pokémon's turn.

Ending Reverse Mode

Reverse Mode can be ended by either calling to a Pokémon in battle or using a Scent on it. Doing this will "open the door to its heart" a bit and bring it closer to being purified. It will also automatically exit it upon fainting.
