Travel Speed

Travel Speed (Japanese: いどうそくど Travel Speed), referred to as Movement Speed prior to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, is a mechanic of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series that governs the number of actions (such as moving, attacking, or using an item) a Pokémon may take in a given turn.

Normally, Pokémon may take only one action in a given turn; however, Pokémon may have their Travel Speeds boosted or dropped. A Pokémon may take one additional action per turn for each boost in Travel Speed. Conversely, a Pokémon can only take one action every two turns if there is a drop in Travel Speed.

Prior to Gates to Infinity, each Pokémon may have up to five simultaneous boosts in Movement Speed and five simultaneous drops in Movement Speed. This does not count permanent boosts such as from snowy weather (for Ice-type Pokémon), the Ability Speed Boost, the Time Tripper IQ skill, or Deoxys Speed Forme's boost. Similarly, for as long as a Pokémon is Paralyzed, it suffers from speed drop, which does not count against the five. Boosts in Movement Speed last anywhere between 8-10 turns, while drops in Movement Speed last anywhere between 6-8 turns. However, Pokémon cannot act more than 4 times per turn, and will automatically end its turn after its second non-movement action (other than boosting its Movement Speed), even if it had remaining actions left.

In Gates to Infinity onward, Travel Speed boosts only allow additional steps, not attacks or items. However, the leader Pokémon and teammates can still act again if the leader applies a speed boost, and non-leader Pokémon still only act every other turn when slowed. This is especially noticeable when linking an attacking move with a speed-boosting move such as Agility, or when using a speed-boosting move in an Alliance, as they allow a follow-up action afterward. Each Pokémon may have up to four simultaneous boosts and only one drop in Travel Speed, and the duration of these can coexist. Boosts in Travel Speed now last 6 turns while drops last 5 turns, and permanent speed boosts are no longer featured.

A drop in Travel Speed is considered a status condition and not a stat reduction (as even after Super Mystery Dungeon introduced Speed stat to the series, Travel Speed retained its function, with the traditional Speed working completely different). Any change in Travel Speed will not be removed by stepping on a Wonder Tile, and any moves that affect stat alterations (such as Haze) do not affect Travel Speed.
