Johto Times is a weekly internet newsletter that publishes articles on the author's personal memories regarding the series, as well as interviews with notable members of the Pokémon franchise and community.

One of the site's stated goals is to document and to preserve the history of the early Pokémon community and franchise from the 90s to 2000s.

Site

Johto Times is a free newsletter on Substack. Articles are sorted by volumes; volumes start at the first article of the year and end at the last article of the year. On August 1st, 2025, the official Johto Times website went live. The website's mascot is Natu.

Includes a list of the most recent issues, the newest article is top of the page. The Archive section includes every older issue from the newsletter since the site's debut.

Interviews

Johto Times conducts interviews occasionally with notable members of the Pokémon franchise and community, such as, but not limited to, Dave Hillenbrand, former General Manager at Pokémon USA; Carol Monahan, former Director of Sales and Logistics at Wizards of the Coast during 1993 through 2000; and Tsukasa Hosono, one of the winners of the 1999 64 Mario Stadium Best Photo Contest who submitted the Charmander photograph. The site has also done interviews with other fan sites, such as Buried Relic and Blue Moon Falls.

This section contains interviews that were included in previous issues of the newsletter.

Features

Features are articles with more depth, such as an article about Satoru Iwata's contributions to the Pokémon franchise.[1] An ongoing series of featured articles is called "The Legacy of Pokémon," with each article detailing Darren's experiences with a separate generation of Pokémon games.

Opinions

Opinion articles are typically about a large-scale subject or a general subject; for example, the state of the TCG is one of the covered subjects in this section.[2]

Collections

Collection articles include the personal collection of Darren, with a set of articles called "My Pokémon Collection."[3] Other collections have been featured on the site, such as Miles' Pokémon Figure Collection.[4]

Memories

The Memories section features unique stories from fans who usually grew up during the early era of Pokémon, such as holidays, events, and birthday parties; these articles are typically named <Name>'s Pokémon Memories but not always, as with "Memories of Pokémon TCG East Coast Super Trainer Showdown." [5]

Mailbag

The Mailbag features contributions by readers who have sent Pokémon-related questions, poems, collections, stories, and other items or works.

About Johto Times

The About section explains details of the history as well as the goals of Johto Times; it also credits both current and former staff. There is weekly content and a focus on "opinions, personal memories, and nostalgia."[6]

It also mentions a goal of Johto Times, the aforementioned goal of preserving the history of the early Pokémon as well as remembering the experience of the 90s and early 2000s fanbase.

There is an encouragement to subscribe to Johto Times at the end. Each new issue of Johto Times is sent to subscribers' inboxes for free.

About the Author

This section is about Darren, the author of Johto Times; Darren has a background in writing articles for online and in-print publications since 2009. Darren first became interested in Pokémon in 1999 and has since played the games since 2001. Darren has also managed successful online communities and video-game-related projects, these projects, and communities, along with the publications are not mentioned by name. Johto Times is hoped to be a positive and welcomed addition to a small section of the Pokémon community.

Darren's favorite game is Pokémon Crystal, and his favorite Pokémon is Rowlet.
