Godey (Japanese: ゴーディ Gaudí) is a character seen in flashbacks in The Rise of Darkrai. He is the great-grandfather of Tonio and the architect of the Space-Time Towers.
In the movies
Godey was a well-known architecht who lived in Alamos Town, where he designed a lush garden according to the principles of nature, people, and Pokémon co-existing in harmony. Roughly one hundred years before the events of The Rise of Darkrai, he initiated construction on his masterpiece, the Space-Time Towers.
One day, during the Towers' construction, Godey was walking in his garden when he overheard Alicia playing Oración on her leaf whistle for the resident Pokémon, including Darkrai. Having previously been shown a nightmare of Dialga and Palkia fighting in and destroying Alamos Town by Darkrai, Godey came to understand that Oración was the solution that could prevent the disaster from taking place. He incorporated the world's largest musical instrument into the Space-Time Towers and recorded their designs in his diary, along with a recounting of seeing Darkrai settling in the garden and a note stating that he was leaving Oración for the people of the future. He also left a photograph of himself with Alicia, with Oración's music and a symbol meant to lead to it on the photo's back, in the journal.
A century later, Godey's great-grandson Tonio found his diary and the information recorded within. As Godey had predicted, Dialga and Palkia invaded Alamos Town and began a battle to the death, their clash causing a dimensional rift to begin consuming the town. Ash, Dawn, Brock, Tonio and Alice managed to decipher the clues Godey left behind, retrieve the music disk for the Space-Time Towers that contained Oración, and play it in time to stop the battle and convince Palkia to reverse the damage to Alamos Town, fulfilling Godey's hope by saving the future.
In the credits of the movie, Godey was seen sitting in the garden, observing the Pokémon living there.
Character
Godey was a visionary architecht who believed in the coexistence of people, Pokémon, and nature. These beliefs informed his work, being prominently reflected in both the Space-Time Towers and the gardens behind them. When troubled by a vision of a future where Alamos Town was destroyed, he went to great lengths to provide the people of that future with the means to prevent it from taking place, ultimately proving successful.
In the manga
Godey appeared in the movie's manga adaptation, where he played a similar role. In this version, he is described as Tonio's grandfather instead of his great-grandfather.
Trivia
- His name and character, as well as his descendant Tonio, are derived from Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí was the famous Spanish artist and architect of La Sagrada Família and Parque Güell, which are both featured prominently in The Rise of Darkrai.
- Godey's original design had a broad, thick moustache instead of a beard.
- Godey is occasionally depicted with a cane, notably in some official artwork and in the photograph of himself and Alicia. However, he is not seen using it to walk at any point.
