Virginia
Virginia is one of the first of The Several States. Among the southern states, Virginia was a commanding presence in the early history of The United States, hosting some of the earliest European permanent colonies such as Jamestown, and hosting Richmond as the capital of the Confederacy during The American Civil War. It continues to play an important role in the political and economic roles of the nation. Of particular note is the region adjacent to Washington DC, where several important national landmarks are located within the borders of Virginia, including Arlington National Cemetery and The Pentagon. Nearby Langley, Virginia is where the CIA is based out of. Virginia also hosts Mount Vernon, the plantation of George Washington. The state also hosts Monticello, the plantation and home of Thomas Jefferson.
For the state that formerly comprised the west of Virginia, see West Virginia.
