Until Dawn

Characters from Until Dawn include:

Samantha "Sam" Giddings

Caption

The best friend of Hannah and the confidant of Josh after the siblings disappearance, Sam took the disappearance especially hard, being against the prank that led to their disappearance in the first place, and returns to the mountain one year later to seek closure. Voiced by Hayden Pantierre

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Action Girl: She shows no hesitation attacking a Wendigo that is currently after Mike. She will also throw a vase at the Psycho and can also hit him with a baseball bat depending on the player's choices.
  • Action Survivor: As the most action like of the females, showing an interest in climbing, Sam has the most action like sequences in the game, managing to possibly escape from the Psycho, and can outrun a Wendigo in the final standoff in the lodge.
  • Bathing Beauty: Spends much of the first half of the game having a bath after arriving at the lodge. The Psycho takes advantage to steal her clothes as part of his scheme and even lampshades it once he makes his presence known to her.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As friendly as she is, she can throw a vase at the Psycho and hit him with a baseball bat and verbally tears into the group for the prank that led to Hannah's disappearance.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: While she does end up with some cuts and scrapes if she survives, she still remains very attractive and the injuries she suffers are minor, especially in comparison to Jessica, Ashley and Emily.
  • Celibate Hero: While she does flirt with Josh, she has none of the sexual innuendos present in the other couples.
  • Dirty Coward: The player can make her run for the switch at the first opportunity, which will kill three people if everyone else has managed to survive.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: She went to school with Josh, Mike, Hannah and Beth and implicitly the rest of the group as well.
  • Friend to All Living Things: She is an animal lover, and she will yell at Chris if he shoots and kills a squirrel.
  • Final Girl: She is the only female who cannot die at all until the final confrontation at the lodge and unless the player screws up the Don't Move prompts, will be the one to finally kill the Makkapitew by blowing up the lodge.
  • Ideal Hero: Sam lacks many of the vices that the other characters possess and will frequently be optimistic about what the odds are.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Should the player screw up the Don't Move prompts in the final confrontation, the Makkapitew will impale Sam in the stomach before ripping her head off.
  • Modesty Towel: After the Psycho steals her clothes, Sam will spend Chapter Five, Six and the beginning of Chapter Seven wearing nothing but a towel.
  • Morality Pet: It is heavily implied that Sam is this to Josh as he acts more kinder around her, and Sam insinuates the belief that had she been aware of how bad his illness was, she would have helped him.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She spends most of Chapter 5 in a Modesty Towel and she avoids many of the scrapes, cuts and gashes that befall Jessica, Emily and Ashley.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: If the player makes her run to the switch and kills someone in the lodge, she will always express remorse in the credits over it.
  • Nice Girl: Sam is a genuinely kind and compassionate woman, lacking the vices and traits that plague the other cast members. Even at her worst, she is only a bit sarcastic than outright mean.
  • Only Sane Woman: Out of all the cast, she is the only one who keeps a cool head. Learning about the Wendigos is one where she is willing to believe Emily's claim that a monster was chasing her, or if Emily was bitten and Ashley and Mike consider shooting her, Sam will be the only one to advocate calm.
  • Out-of-Character is Serious Business: While Sam has her moments of swearing throughout the game, it usually is due to her being absoluetly terrified, and she never swears directly at someone. However, should the player opt to have Mike shoot Emily, she will swear at Mike out of sheer disgust and horror over killing Emily over something that may not have happened, and is later revealed to be something that would not happen anyway.
  • Plot Armor: She cannot die until the final confrontation in the lodge no matter what.
  • She Swears a Lot: Nowhere near the degree of Emily or Mike and to a lesser degree, Jessica, but if sufficiently startled or scared, she won't hesitate to let them fly, getting chased by the Psycho, or learning about the Wendigos in the Sanatorium are the prime examples.

Michael "Mike" Munroe

Caption

The president of the college's athletics club and the boyfriend of Emily and Jessica. He was aware of Hannah's feelings for him and used it to lure her into a Prank Date that led to Hannah's disappearance.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

  • Adaptational Heroism: In the original game, Mike is a very active participant in the prank, and the note he writes is very suggestive, and he actively encourages Hannah to undress. In the remake, the note he writes has him say that he sympathizes with Hannah, he never implicitly tells Hannah to undress, and he is shown to be deeply reluctant about the prank.
  • Amicable Exes: He wants to be this with Emily, though the rivalry between Emily and Jessica and Matt's lingering suspicions heavily complicate it. His threat to shoot Emily if she has been bitten quite understandably puts an end to any amicability on her part.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Whether or not he was cheating with Emily. Word of God states that he was not.
  • Badass Longcoat: He gets a longcoat in his first trip through the Sanatorium, which he keeps for the rest of the game.
  • Badass Normal: He is only a normal person, but he manages to survive several hand to hand fights with the Wendigos.
  • Big No: He lets one out if he fails to get to Jessica in time after the Makkapitew kidnaps her. He will let out another one when he and Sam enter the Makkapitew's trophy room and find the bodies of any of their friends if they died.
  • Chick Magnet: He dated Emily and Jessica, and Hannah had a major crush on him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: In the remake, he certainly had an issue with Hannah's obsession with him, but he had serious misgivings about the harshness of the prank and is very hesitant to go through with it when Hannah enters the room.
  • Fingore: Should he fall for the false waiving hand and get his fingers caught in a bear trap, one way to free them is to have Mike lose his fingers.
  • Handicapped Badass: He can pull off a lot of his most impressive actions even though he is missing two of his fingers if the player had him cut them off.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: His general depiction, yes he took part in the prank that led to Hannah's disappearance, and he also has his fair moments of rudeness, but he is a genuinely good person deep down and he immediately storms after Jessica when the Makkapitew kidnaps her.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Mike believes Josh is responsible for Jessica's abduction and possible death, completely ignoring Josh would have to be much stronger to pull through the glass window of a front door and not have any injury, or that he would be able to drag Jessica so easily and quickly, especially if Jessica winds up dead with her jaw torn off, as it would be very hard for any human to pull off that feat, let alone one as lanky and unphysical as Josh. He later leaves Josh tied up, easily allowing the Makkapitew to capture him forcing everyone to leave the safe room to find him and getting everyone else possibly killed as a result.
  • Plot Armor: Much like Sam, he cannot die until the final confrontation in the lodge.
  • Put on a Bus to Hell: If he kills Emily and survives the night, his confession to the police makes it very clear Mike will go to prison for it, especially since it is discovered that Emily did not need to die.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: While he gets a fair degree of criticism for his role in the prank on Hannah, he really gets it if he opts to shoot Emily believing she could turn into a Wendigo. His relationship with everybody in the safe room, especially Sam, is ruined by this one act, and it is made very clear if they survive that everyone will happily testify against him.

Joshua "Josh" Washington

Caption

The brother of Hannah and Beth, and the best friend of Sam and Chris, Josh took the disappereance of his siblings hard and he invites the gang back up to the mountain to honor their memory, while planning a little surprise for them.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Alas, Poor Villain: He is given this treatment by Sam and Chris at the end of the game.
  • Decoy Protagonist: He is set up as one of the main protagonists, but it turns out he is one of the main antagonists, by masquerading as the Psycho.
  • Disc One Final Boss: His status as the Psycho ends the first half of the game, at which the Wendigos, especially the Makkapitew take center stage.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He loved his sisters deeply, and his actions as the Psycho are retribution at the group for causing their disappearance due to their prank they pulled on them a year ago.
  • Faking the Dead: Fakes his own death in a trap so he can act as the Psycho with no suspicion.
  • Large Ham: Josh goes into a big spiel once he gets unmasked.
  • Redemption Earns Life: In the remake, if Josh showed remorse for his actions as the Psycho, if nobody in the group was killed by the Makkapitew, then Josh will resist the Wendigo spirits compelling him to eat human flesh and will be found by the police as a full human.
  • Ship Tease: He has a fair amount of teasing with Sam throughout the game, and Sam actually wonders if they could have been together.
  • Spanner in the Works: His prank was meant to be harmless, but he had no idea the Makkapitew would start actually attacking the group. He is horrified when he learns the truth, and if anyone dies and he sees the bodies, he screams in horror and remorse.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: The original game had him die no matter what, either being killed by the Makkapitew, or becoming a Wendigo. The remake adds a third ending where he can survive as an actual human.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Josh's invitation to the rest of the gang up to the mountain, along with his acts as the Psycho, could potentially get everyone killed by the Makkapitew.

Christopher "Chris" Hartley

Josh's best friend and the main nerd of the group. By far one of the nicest aside from Sam, he harbors a crush on Ashley and he deeply regrets the prank against Hannah, despite being passed out when it happened.

  • Action Survivor: One of the most aside from Mike and Sam, in that he can survive a fight with the Makkapitew despite having an injured leg, and managing to shoot it back four times in a row.
  • Badass Adorable: Is a socially akward nerd who jokes around a lot, but he is one of the few protagonists who can survive fighting a Wendigo head on.
  • Break the Cutie: Out of all the protagonists, he gets it the worst. He suffers through several traumatic events in the span of a few hours, where he learns the Psycho who is continuously stalking him is Josh, sees the Stranger get brutally decapitated, and can possibly see Mike shoot Emily if she was bitten. By the time it is over, he is utterly guilt ridden and can hardly joke around.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Played for Drama. Chris was passed out along with Josh, and is the only one aside from Sam who explicitly expresses remorse without the player's input, seemingly believing that had he been awake, he might have been able to stop the prank, or at least prevent Hannah from fleeing the lodge.
  • Crouching Scholar Hidden Badass: By his own admission, he is not the most athletic member, and admits he was not the best in gym, but when he is chased by the Makkapitew, should he pass the QuickTime events, he can easily prove to be very athletic and capable even with an injured leg.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He has this bad with Ashley, and she reciprocates, suffering from the same problem. The events of the night can result in the two of them confessing.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite how horrified he is at Josh's act as the Psycho, he is visibly uneasy with how roughly and violently Mike treats him, and does not hesitate to disarm Mike when he points a loaded pistol at Josh.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Has blue eyes and is the nicest of all the male members.
  • Kick the Dog: In the beginning scene where he first becomes playable, he can shoot a squirrel on the shooting range. This will bite the player later on however.
  • Off with His Head: Should he die in the game, the Makkapitew will always tear his head off.
  • Plot Armor: Should Chris manage to live until Chapter 10, he will be the first one to escape the lodge before Sam and Mike try to blow it up. Thus, should Sam run for the switch at the first opportunity, Chris will always survive.
  • The Trickster: He is the main jokester, aside from Josh, and he serves as the major comic relief of the group.

Ashley "Ash" Brown

The bookworm of the group, Ashley is the most easily scared and had the least amount of involvement in the prank against Hannah. She has feelings for Chris, but wonders if he will reciprocate.

  • The Atoner: She can express remorse for how the prank against Hannah went, even apologizing to her in the séance.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Provided the player did not shoot Ashley, she will open the door for Chris with the Makkapitew in hot pursuit, saving his life.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Has feelings for Chris, but cannot muster up the nerve to talk to him. He has the same issue, but the events of the night can cause them to become a couple.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Terrified as she is of Emily turning into a Wendigo if she was bitten, she will be horrified when Michael considers shooting her and will call him out if he does do the deed. She will apologize to Emily if Mike cannot do it, not even remotely trying to make a defence.
  • The Load: In contrast with all the other females, Ashley does not have any proactive skills.
  • Idiot Ball: Ashley can easily fall for the Makkapitew's voice trick, despite having read the journal saying Wendigos can mimic human voices.
  • Off with His Head: Should she fall for the Makkapitew's trick, it will cut off her head.
  • Official Couple: With Chris, especially if they both manage to survive the night.
  • Press X to Die: Ashley is the only character whose death is entirely up to the player investigating something they shouldn't. Everyone else is due to prior decisions made, or due to failing QuickTime events.

Emily "Em" Davis

Mike's ex girlfriend and a full supporter of the plot against Hannah. She is now dating Matt.

  • Action Survivor: Outside of Sam, Emily is by far the most skilled at surviving. When she wakes up in the mines, despite being injured, she does not hesitate to use part of her top as a makeshift torch. She can also successfully outrun the Makkapitew when it attacks her, and improvising to make several obstacles, which is crucial to saving her life in the ensuing chase.
  • Alpha Bitch: She has the highest grades out of everyone, and she is very arrogant and self absorbed.
  • Amicable Exes: With Mike, much to Matt's anger if he thinks she is cheating on him. If she gets bitten and Mike points a gun at her, it understandably ends, as she will hold a vicious grudge against him.
  • Asian and Nerdy: She is of Asian descent, and she is the most intellectually gifted of the cast, with her stating to have the highest grades out of all of them.
  • Break the Haughty: Starts out very arrogant and confident in the game, but her ordeal in the mines, especially if Mike almost shoots her causes her arrogance and overconfidence to utterly collapse.
  • Butt Monkey: She suffers a lot during her time in the game, especially in the mines.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: If Matt consistently takes her side in arguements, she will begin to look at him more kindly. It is implied that she initially was just using him as a rebound, but if their relationship improves over the game, it is indicated she genuinly sees him as a boyfriend.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She is the only one who will express horror over learning the truth about Beth and Hannah's disappearance, and goes into horror and shock should she discover Beth's head. It is indicated that she searched for the two during their disappearance, and it is implied she broke up with Michael precisely because of the prank.
  • Eye Scream: All of her possible deaths end with her getting hit in the eye. The Makkapitew will gouge her eyes out with its claws, and Mike can shoot her in the left eyeball should he decide to kill her.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: If Emily was bitten by the Makkapitew and Mike points a gun at her, she is understandably horrified that Mike is seriously considering shooting her over a bite wound. If Mike shows her mercy, she is deeply shaken and takes a moment to compose herself.
  • Genre Savvy: Her first reaction the second she is told there is something wrong is to get off the mountain. Unfortunaetly, it isin't that easy.
  • Screaming Woman: She screams bloody murder as the Makkapitew chases her, though that is very understandable.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: Goes into one once Mike considers shooting her, and should he not, she shakes and trembles as she gets to her feet.
  • Zombie Infectee: Should she be bitten at the mines, Ashley and Mike will assume she will turn, and they call for her to be thrown out. Mike will then drastically up the issue by pointing a pistol at her and possibly killing her. Emily will later learn the bite does nothing to her.

Matthew "Matt" Taylor

The most athletic of the group, he is a linebacker who had one of the most insidious roles in the prank against Hannah by filming it on his phone. He is now dating Emily.

  • Always Save the Girl: He can try to save Emily and Jessica, though it will make keeping him alive much harder.
  • Black Dude Dies First: By far the absolute hardest member of the group to keep alive, since his deaths are very dependent on rather innocuous choices.
  • Book Dumb: He admits he is in school due to his football skills, rather than having good grades.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He is deeply angry if he suspects Emily of cheating on him with Mike, and this can escalate into a fight if the player chooses.
  • Epic Fail: He can have one of the most silly deaths in the entire game, being pushed to his death by a herd of caribou.
  • Nice Guy: One of the kinder members of the group, though he does show anger at Emily's poor treatment of him.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: What his relationship with Emily heavily amounts to, especially if he thinks Emily is cheating on him with Mike.
  • Out of Focus: He is one of the easiest members to lose, and even if you don't get him killed, he won't show up again until Chapter 10.

Jessica "Jess" Riley

Mike's new girlfriend, and the mastermind of the prank against Hannah, alogn with being a former beauty queen.

  • Action Survivor: Despite being badly injured, if she is still alive after the chase to the mines, she will come to and you will get the chance to save her. Despite being in immense pain, she can pass all the Don't Move prompts on her own if Matt is dead, and she can escape from the mines on her own initiative.
  • Alpha Bitch: Is the one responsible for the prank that led to Hannah and Beth's disappearance, and can get into a fight with Emily if the player chooses.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Inverted Trope. Her getting dragged through a window, deep snow, and rock, then getting dropped hard on an elevator, along with said elevator plummeting, causes her to be covered in bruises and cuts, and is the most visibly scarred of the entire cast.
  • Dangerous Windows: After going outside to yell at her friends over a presumed prank, the Makkapitew proceeds to violently drag her through the cabin's front door window, severely injuring her.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: She was the one responsible for the prank against Hannah, and she can be the first victim of the Makkapitew, who is possessing Hannah's body.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She is the most attractive out of all the females, and then it gets turned into Fan Disservice due to all the cuts and gashes she gets.
  • Out of Focus: After she gets abducted, regardless if she died or not, she will not be seen again until Chapter 10.
  • Too Dumb to Live: While other characters can have their moments depending on the player, Jessica is the only one who does so outside of the player's decision. She goes outside to yell after her phone gets thrown through a window, despite having had to run for her life from what she thought was a bear just a few seconds ago. Not surprisingly, she gets grabbed by the Makkapitew the second she reenters the cabin.

The Makkapitew

The most powerful of the Wendigos on Blackwood Mountain. It was responsible for the disappearance of Hannah and Beth, and possessed Hannah after she was forced to eat Beth's corpse to survive. Now it stalks the gang after they return to the mountain, where it will attempt to feast on their flesh should it manage to kill them.

  • Adaptational Weakling: Relativly minor, but still noticeable. Despite being much closer to how the Algonquin depicted Wendigos, the Makkapitew cannot speak, except with vocal mimicry. Algonquin myth states that Wendigos still posses the ability and can taunt and hold conversations with their victims.
  • Bald of Evil: Part of the transformation means whoever gets possesed loses their hair. Hannah had long flowing hair, but the Makkapitew's possession makes her completely bald.
  • Big Bad: The main threat on the mountain, hunting and stalking the cast once it arrives on the mountain.
  • Bad Boss: Despite being an Alpha Wendigo, it has no trouble fighting and killing other Wendigos for interfering, violently ripping off one of their heads in the lodge, and knocking the other out easily. Furthermore, despite knowing where they are imprisoned by the Stranger, the Makkapitew makes no attempt to help them.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: He won in the prequel The Inpatient when he managed to get a new host body, and he can win if everyone in the cast dies, even though there is no way he survives the night with his current host body.
  • Cruel Mercy: After he does something big to the cast, he generally tends to leave the others alone, often with the knowledge that someone is dead, or thinks are dead. Mike and Ashley are the main victims to go through this.
  • Dead Guy on Display: Will display the corpse of the Stranger, along with the main cast if he has killed any of them, in a trophy room in the mines.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: Many of its actions, in addition to ratcheting up the fear of its victims, all too often resemble inappropriate humor, an excellent example being to scare a deer towards Mike and Jessica just to scare them, and then later putting it in their path, just so it can see them run.
  • Evil Makes You Ugly: Getting possessed makes you lose all your looks and causes you to resemble an undead corpse.
  • Evil Is Bigger: The Makkapitew possessing Hannah is noticeably much taller than anyone else in the game, the other Wendigos are around average height, while the Makkapitew is taller than Mike, who is around six feet.
  • Fatal Flaw: Two of them.
    • Greed. Had it the Makkapitew merely left the survivors alone in the lodge shortly before the sun rose, it might have lived through the night. But it could not resist the urge to go after them, and it gets killed in the lodge explosion.
    • Wrath. It becomes obvious that it utterly hates Sam and Mike and pursues the two with harsh screeches of rage, especially if they learn that it is possessing Hannah. Had it left the two alone it probably could have cut its losses, but the decision to stay after them ends in its death.
  • Fate Worse Than Death: Anyone possessed is a prisoner in their own body. SHould it catch any of the protagonists, Hannah will beg either for help or for the Makkapitew to spare her friends, but it won't listen.
  • Forced to Watch: One of its favorite tactics is to have someone watch or learn that someone it cares about is dead. Mike will go through this regardless if Jessica is killed or not, and Ashley will also suffer this should the Makkapitew manage to kill Chris.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The Makkapitew takes Josh to the mine, but this merely causes Sam and Mike to go after Josh to get the key to the cable car, which in turn directly leads to the Makkapitew's death.
  • Kick the Dog: The Makkapitew does it so much, that it is effectivly a normal day for it.
    • Its first memorable act in the game is to attack and chase Beth and Hannah in the prologue, just for its own amusement. The Events of the Past make it very clear he gave the twins a very good look at what was chasing them. This winds up costing the Makkapitew its original body, but it still results in Beth dying and Hannah being stuck in the mines.
    • In the game proper, it scares a moose towards Mike and Jessica, fatally wounds it, then leaves it to bleed out and puts it in their path, whereupon it drags it out of their way and lets them run. It literally was right next to them, and still let them run to get a thrill out of chasing them.
    • It will throw Jessica's phone into the cabin, then violently drags her through a window back to the mine. It won't kill her, but let her scream all for its own amusement.
    • Regardless whether or not Jessica is alive or dead, it will look at Mike as he grieves. Mike is stationary, but the Makkapitew wont attack him anyway, only moving if Mike tries to shoot him, clearly enjoying seeing him mourning.
    • Should it successfully kill Chris, it will throw his head right in front of Ashley, to let her know her boyfriend died.
  • Kill It with Fire: The one thing the Makkapitew will fear is fire, since it burns off the second layer of skin, and therefore is very careful to avoid being near if at all possible.
  • Know When to Fold'Em: The Makkapitew never attacks the lodge, and does not try to enter it until the final battle. As an ambush predator, it is fully reliant on surprise, speed and camoflauge, and a well lit and maintained building is complete anathmea to it. It only enters the building in the finale, once it is confident there is nobody in it.
  • Lean and Mean: The Makkapitew's body is horribly emaciated, but is extremely fast and a violent monster that tries to kill anyone it comes into contact with.
  • Lightning Bruiser: It is extremely fast, and it will kill the protagonists if it catches them extremely quickly.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Should Mike manage to keep up with it, the Makkapitew won't bother killing Jessica and just drops her onto the elevator, badly injured but still alive. This isn't out of mercy, but the Makkapitew is stated to be an ambush predator and he is not interested in fighting Mike in a lit area or him spreading the alarm. Very tellingly, it avoids going directly after the cast until it encounters Emily in the mines, whereupon regardless if it kills her or not, the cast will be alerted to its presence anyway and there is no point hiding anyway.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: It tracks the entire cast throughout the night, without having any idea where they might be, and it will not give up until it catches them.
