Sony's Spider-Man Universe (also known as the SSU, and formerly known as Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters or SPUMC) is a cinematic universe created by Sony after spin-offs of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were canceled. The films are based on Spider-Man characters and run concurrently to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a deal was constructed with Marvel owner Disney to allow Spider-Man to appear in that franchise while Sony retains the film rights. Despite the name Spider-Man is not a character in this universe, though he has been mentioned and referenced on occasion. Instead this franchise focuses on the character associated with Spider-Man, which is mainly his villains though there are plans to focus on the heroes connected to him as well.

- Adapted Out: Despite the name, Spider-Man isn't a main character in this universe, which means that in Venom he's completely removed from the character's origin story. Despite this alternate versions of Spider-Man have appeared in post credits scenes, like Peter B. Parker from Into the Spider-Verse in Venom and MCU Spidey in Let There Be Carnage. The SSU Peter finally makes a small cameo in Madame Web as an infant.
- Alternate Continuity: Take place in a continuity separate from the MCU and previous Spider-Man films.
- Alternate Universe:
- The first Venom film reveals that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse occur in a different universe to the SSU. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would reinforce this connection by having Mrs. Chen make a cameo appearance and stating that the SSU is Earth-688 (though because there's already an Earth-688 in the Marvel multiverse, it's actual designation is Earth-688B).
- Venom: Let There Be Carnage reveals that this universe takes place in a separate reality to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Spider-Man: No Way Home also revealing that Spider-Man Trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man are also canon in other universes.
- Despite being part of the SSU, Spider-Noir will take place in a separate universe to the one the films take place in in 1930s New York.
- Darker and Edgier: Compared to other Spider-Man films and the MCU in general outside the Netflix shows, these films aren't afraid of mature content such as Precision F-Strikes and focus on antiheroes.
- Shared Universe: All the films take place within the same world, though beside small nods it's largely separate
- Truer to the Text: Compared to previous Spider-Man films, where characters were generally reimagined to make them more grounded, such as the Venom symbiote not being sentient in Spider-Man 3, or fit into the world they inhabit, like the Vulture's suit coming from alien technology in Spider-Man: Homecoming, these films try to adapt the comics as faithfully as possible.
