Shivers is a Canadian horror film released in 1975. It was written and directed by David Cronenberg.
The story follows residents of an apartment building that becomes infested with parasites. The parasites, created by a research doctor who wanted humanity to become a "beautiful mindless orgy", infect people to turn them into sex zombies. The medical doctor of the apartment, Dr. Roger St. Luc, investigates the infections, which spread like an STD.
Tropes used in Shivers (1975 film) include:
- And Then John Was a Zombie: At the end, Roger becomes infected with the parasite he was trying to fight.
- Apocalypse How: In the last scene, a news bulletin reveals that there is an outbreak of sexual assaults that is rapidly spreading since the apartment completely succumbed to the infection.
- Creator Cameo: As Roger and Nurse Forsythe are trying to escape down a hallway, director David Cronenberg appears as one of the infected people who grab them.
- Dirty Old Man: Dr. Hobbes was caught having sex with one of his twelve-year old students. Years later, he creates the parasite that makes victims want to have sex without inhibition, intending to infect everyone.
- Downer Ending: Everyone in the apartment is either dead or infected, and the last scene shows them leaving the island to spread the parasites.
- Gone Horribly Right: Dr. Hobbes created the parasites in the hope that people would think less and submit to their primal urges. After observing how his guinea pig Annabelle "went berserk", he realizes his mistake and decides to kill her to try to stop the parasites, but he is too late as the parasites had already spread to other hosts.
- Hospital Hottie: Nurse Forsythe is an attractive worker in the apartment's clinic. Men flirt with her, and she doesn't mind changing out of her uniform while Roger watches.
- Mad Doctor: Dr. Emil Hobbes created a parasite that makes people act on violent and sexual urges, and he releases it with the hope of infecting everyone.
- Murder-Suicide: Dr. Hobbes strangles the first person he infected, cuts her open to kill the parasites with acid, and then slices his neck open.
- Orifice Invasion: Several people were infected by parasites entering their mouths while being kissed. One woman was infected by a parasite entering her vagina while she was bathing.
- Patient Zero: Annabelle, with whom Dr. Emil Hobbes had a sexual relationship, is the first person to be infected with the parasites. Hobbes kills her towards the beginning of the film, but she had already spread the parasites to other residents of her apartment building.
- The Plague: An apartment building is infested with a parasite resembling a slug. It infects humans and makes them extremely lustful and impulsive so that it can spread through sexual contact to other people.
- Teacher-Student Romance: Dr. Hobbes begins a sexual relationship with a young girl he taught. He continued the relationship into their adulthood when he made her Patient Zero for the parasites he created.
