Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening (simply "Devil May Cry 3" in Japanese) is the third installment of the Devil May Cry series, but the first chronologically, set ten years before the first game on the series.

Dante had already set up his shop but had no idea how to name it yet. Before he even begins thinking about the name, a weird man called Arkham comes to his office with an "invitation" from his brother Vergil, and by that, we mean a bunch of demons coming out of the windows and walls to attack Dante. After Dante defeats some demons, a giant stone tower emerges from the ground, towering over the city below. Sensing Vergil is on the top of the tower, Dante decides to climb it.

Meanwhile, Vergil and Arkham discuss their plan on top of it: they want Dante's half of an amulet given to Dante and Vergil. The tower, called the Temen-ni-gru, stores the demonic power of Sparda, their father. The amulet is a fundamental part of the plan to obtain said power.

Tropes used in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening include:
  • Badass Normal: Lady is just a human who uses fire weapons to kill demons.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Vergil and Arkham. Initially, it seems Vergil is just employing Arkham but between Mission 13 and 14, it is revealed that Arkham not only sought Sparda's power for himself but had planned for Lady to survive because only that way the path for Sparda's power could be unsealed..
  • Catholic School Girls Rule: Lady wears such an outfit, indicating she is likely underage.
  • Cerebus Retcon: In the first game, the name "Devil May Cry" didn't seem to be anything more than a joke title about the idea of a demon hunter like Dante making devils cry in pain. At the end of the game, Lady says the name while referring to the fact despite being a half-demon, Dante can cry..
  • The Corrupter: Lady comes to believe Vergil corrupted and even forced his father to kill her mother by Mission 13. Vergil call her foolish for believing on that.
  • Dangerously-Short Skirt: Lady wears a schoolgirl skirt decorated with bullets, and is dangerous to demons as Dante and Vergil.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: The guardians of the Temen-ni-gru transform themselves into weapons to help Dante on his quest once he defeats them.
  • Dragon Ascendant: Arkham eventually hijacks Vergil's plot to take Sparda's power by himself.
  • Enemy Mine: Dante and Vergil team up to take on Arkham in Mission 19.
  • Foregone Conclusion:
    • Vergil will be enslaved by Mundus, becoming his minion, Nelo Angelo.
    • Dante will name his shop Devil May Cry.
  • Hero Antagonist: The guardians of the Temen-ni-gru are demons who are there to prevent someone unworthy of taking Sparda's power.
  • Insistent Terminology: Lady constantly calls Vergil and Dante "demons" without referring to their human heritage, eventually forcing Dante to correct her.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Downplayed with Lady. She is pretty cute, wearing a skimpy schoolgirl uniform, but her unkempt appearance and overly serious behavior downplays her fanservice-y traits.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Arkham's Jester persona ceases to appear after Mission 13, as the plot takes a serious turn.
  • The Starscream: Inverted and then played straight. Vergil seemingly kills Arkham for being too soft on his daughter, and then Arkham eventually gets even on him by betraying him at the end of Mission 13.
  • Take Over the World: Implied by Dante to be the case with Vergil, who asks what his brother would even do with Sparda's power only to be received with silence.
  • Token Human: Lady is the only major character who is completely human. Vergil and Dante are half-demons, something is up with Arkham by the changing spots on his face, and Jester is just Arkham anyway.
  • Worf Had the Flu: When Dante fights Lady at Mission 16, she has a leg injury and spends most of the fight trying to attack him with cheap shots. Thus, the battle becomes far simpler than it otherwise would be..
  • You Killed My Father: Lady comes to the Temen-nigru because Arkham killed her mother beforehand. Then the circumstance twist as Vergil kills Arkham, and then she comes for Vergil for killing Arkham, believing the half-demon had corrupted him somehow, to Vergil's amusement.
